Workshop Topics

Mad Science workshops spark imaginative learning!

Wherever your kids are!  We come to you -- whether it's to your classroom, your library or a location of your choice.

Our hands-on approach and focus on science and engineering practices teaches kids about the fun of science and helps develop creativity.

  • Appropriate for children ages 5-12 (K-6)
  • Workshops have a maximum of 30 children per session and generally last for one hour with inquiry based discussions, cool demonstrations and hands-on activities.
  • Children participate in making a unique take-home project!
  • We'll need enough space for kids to work comfortably without being disturbed.  Since many activities are done as small groups, tables or floor space tends to work better than desks.
  • We also have some workshops for Pre-K (ages 4 - 6) children that generally last from 30-45 minutes, with a maximum of 15 children per session.

Here are just a few of our fun and interactive workshops that focus on science and engineering practice:

Fundamental Forces

Introduces students to the basic concepts of forces. Allows children to encounter their own force of gravity And to see what happens to objects when different forces are applied; this helps to illustrate things like gravity, racetrack, centrifugal, and centripetal force. Children also get a chance to experiment with gyroscopes and loops.

Current Events

Students problem-solve to create simple circuits that will light a bulb. Hands-on activities also allow them to explore more complex series of circuits. They experience a nerve-tester, Mad Science electricity labs, and our amazing Tooth Tunes device. They also observe how electricity flows through wires and water.

Mineral Mania

Peak beneath the crust and uncover what it's made of - Discover Planet Earth! This workshop introduces children to the world of geology, including geological formation, classification systems and the fundamental characteristics of rocks and minerals, through hands-on fun, discussions and demonstrations.  The children will recreate the process of rock formation and devise ways to identify and classify rocks and minerals.  They'll experience the thrill of panning for gems; and the gems they find, they'll get to take home and keep for further study and identification!

Slippery Science

Goop, ooze, and slime are three words sure to put a smile on any child's face! This workshop introduces children to the world of polymers through hands-on fun, discussions and demonstrations.  The children will explore several different polymers; from common Tupperware to our "Mystery Polymer" and ooze that seems to defy gravity.  They'll get to touch, observe and talk about what makes up a polymer, and best of all, each child will make his or her own batch of colorful, ooey-gooey Mad Science Slime to take home!
